The stencil has holes in the corners so you can easily mark the fabric in order to line up repeats accurately. This makes a very nice easy to stitch border design. As with many sashiko designs, it is possible to use only parts of the design to create more designs. In the photos here I have shown 'stars' made using only the centre lines.
