Napoleon's main aim was to secure his office for his son and he therefore issued a proclamation in support of the plebiscitum which asked that the public extend to his son the almost unanimous support he had himself enjoyed and which had previously conferred upon him the most extensive powers

This cartoon shows Charles Parnell, the Irish Nationalist leader, creeping past the barrels of the gunpowder of Rebellion, Sedition and Anarchy. There had been much unrest in Ireland, and this had culminated in the murder of Lord Mountmorris in September 1880. Whilst Parnell and his fellow Irish MPs denounced the murder and other crimes, they were so ambiguous in their choice of words that many were led to believe that
