This is in fact the second raising of the flag on Mount Suribachi, the first of which occurred earlier in the day, with a much smaller flag. Incredibly, the fighting between the US Army and the Imperial Japanese Army would not cease for another month. I've been wanting to do this particular photograph for many years after
