Joni Mitchell wrote about travel, escape and solitude in long, winding melodic lines with little in the way of conventional choruses. Jaco Pastorius's fretless bass colours tracks such as 'Coyote', 'Refuge of the Roads' and the title song, giving the album a floating, jazz tinged feel.
